1-Hydroxy-9-keto-3-alkyl-dibenzob,dpyrans or 1,9-dihydroxy-3-alkyl-dibenzob,dpyrans are oxygenated on the penultimate carbon of the alkyl side chain by fermentation with the micro-organism Bacillus cereus NRRL B-8172 to form new compounds having the formula I, wherein X and Y are either both hydrogen or one is hydrogen and the other methyl;, wherein, when taken singly one of the pair R and R1 and, one of the pair R2 and R3 is hydrogen and the other is hydroxyl and, when taken together, the pair R and R1 and the pair R2 and R3 form the oxygen of a ketone group; and wherein n is 1, 2, 3 or 4.
