An improved x-ray or other ionizing radiation detector includes an array of adjacent cells consisting of alternately-disposed oppositely-polarized electrodes and guard electrodes and insulators between them. Uniform spacing between electrodes and close control of the overall length of the array are achieved by depositing viscous resinous adhesive at selected location between the electrodes and insulators during assembly. Groups of cells (i.e. subassemblies) are formed in this manner by assembling the electrode elements and insulators in proper sequence in a form or die which has a radius of curvature, either finite or infinite conforming, with that desired for the detector array.
