Abstract From the Canadian patent

Linear polarizers are prepared by deposition of an alignment film on a substrate, the deposition of the alignment film occurring in a direction which makes an acute angle to the supporting substrate. A solution of dichroic or pleochroic dyes in a volatile solvent is then deposited onto the alignment film and left to evaporate. After evaporation of the solvent a layer of uniformly aligned dye molecules is left on the substrate. Unpolarized light incident on this layer becomes linearly polarized in transmission through the layer.

Why it's free to use

  • Granted January 20, 1981. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended January 20, 1998.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
