Phenoxyphenoxyalkanecarboxylic acid derivatives with herbicidal and plant-growth regulating especially plant, growth inhibiting, action are disclosed. These compounds have the formula wherein, R1 is hydrogen, C1-C4alkyl or C2-C8alkoxyalkyl R2 is hydrogen or C1-C4alkyl, R3 is halogen cyano or nitro, R4 is hydrogen, cyano or trifluoromethyl and A is cyano, carboxyl, a carboxylic acid salt an ester a thioester or an amide.
