Patterned inhomogeneities of physio-chemical behavior are generated within volumes of material by controlled placement of simultaneous and sequential multiphoton absorption. The inhomogeneities are useful in production of variable refractive index optical components three-dimen-, sional photo-resist fabrication and in the operation of, quantum computer storage and retrieval in three-dimensional computer memory systems.
