A process for retarding undesirable buildup of polymeric material on the internal surfaces of reactors used in the polymerization of substantially water-insoluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer particularly vinyl chloride monomer, comprising intro-, ducing sulfur trioxide into the reactor in an amount sufficient to provide at least about 0.045 gram of sulfur trioxide per gallon of reactor volume.
