Novel o-nitro-o-azaarylidene dyes are provided in which the o-nitro-o-azaaryl group of the dye is joined through a methine linkage to a basic heterocyclic nucleus containing an electron donating atom. These dyes are photobleachable. The photobleachable properties of the dyes make them useful in a variety of photographic applications. For example, they can be used to provide lightsensitive elements in which images can be formed in or on a support by exposure to light to which the dye is sensitive; or to provide photobleachable halation protection in photographic, including photothermographic elements having, coated thereon a photosensitive imaging layer.
