A process and an apparatus for adjusting a welding torch to a desired position relative to a joint to be welded are disclosed. Arcs are generated between the welding torch and different areas of the opposite sides of the joint. Selected arc parameters preferably current or voltage, are measured and used to derive characteristic values for the arcs. These values are then combined mathematically and the results compared with a standard representative of the desired position of the torch relative to the joint and the difference is used to adjust the torch position.
