A method of producing a 12-dihydro steroid particularly, a 3,7-disubstituted-12-dihydro steroid such as 3.alpha.7.alpha.-dihydroxy- 5.beta.-cholanic acid, by subjecting a 12-hydroxy steroid to the action of a 12-dehydroxylase producing microorganism in a suitable medium The 12-hydroxy steroid may be subjected to the action of the microorganism itself or a 12-dehydroxylase enzyme produced by the microorganism. The microorganism is preferably one from the group of Clostridium and Bifidobacterium especially, Clostridium perfringens and Clostridium welchii. The 12-dihydro steroids have desirable pharmacological properties such as hypolipidemic activity.
