The present invention provides a process for the Hofmann rearrangement of .alpha..beta.-unsaturated amide polymer by haloamidating the .alpha..beta.-unsaturated amide polymer with a hypohalite in a medium of aqueous alkali solution and subjecting the resulting haloamide to rearrangement reaction characterized by con-, ducting the haloamidation reaction at -10 to 10° C and the rearrangement reaction at -10 to 15° C.
