This invention discloses a novel process for preparing 2-chlorosulfinylazetidin-4-one compounds of the formula: wherein R is either an amido, or imido or imidazolidinyl group and R1 is a carboxylic acid protecting group which, comprises reacting the corresponding penicillin sulfoxide with a N-chloro halogenating agent at a temperature of from about 75°C to about 135°C. The sulfinyl chlorides can be treated with stannic chloride to produce a 3-exomethylenecephem sulfoxide, an intermediate in the preparation of cephalosporin antibiotics. Some of the sulfinyl chlorides prepared by the process are themselves novel.

Why it's free to use
- Granted January 1, 1980. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended January 1, 1997.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
