A process for activating a catalytic composition including a porous inorganic oxide carrier, a platinum group component and a tin component comprising: reacting the catalytic composition with an activating gas including oxygen at a temperature within the range from about 500°F. to about 1300°F. for at least about 0.5 hour. The activating gas preferably includes a halogenating component. The activating gas is preferably slightly moist and is preferably flowed through the catalytic composition.
