There are disclosed instruments and methods for measuring the characteristics of only a selected portion of an overall transmission channel. A test tone is transmitted from a test site to a remote facility over a path to be tested, and the received signal is transmitted back to the test site over a return path. Under ordinary circumstances, it is not possible to distinguish at the test site between the distortions which arose during the forward and return transmissions. In accordance with the invention apparatus is inserted at the remote facility which amplifies the received noise relative to the test tone.
