Open the CIPO recordAbstract From the Canadian patent
A light image of an object to be recognized is scanned in a series of narrow elongated laterally displaced parallel areas. Photoelectric means responds successively to the overall light from successive areas and produces corresponding signals. These signals are converted to corresponding digital values. The resultant digital representation of the object may be compared by a computer with digital representations of other objects obtained in the same manner to determine whether they are alike or unlike.

Why it's free to use
- Granted July 31, 1979. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended July 31, 1996.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
