Novel polymers of the cyclic adducts of maleic anhydride and cyclic conjugated dienes such as cyclopentadiene. The polymers are prepared by heating the cyclic adduct or, a mixture of the diene and maleic anhydride in the presence, of a free radical precursor such as a peroxygen compound, at a temperature above 100°C. The novel polymers of this invention may be used as thickeners, stabilizers dispersants, binders, emulsifiers, textile and paper sizing agents leveling, agents in floor polishes. The polyanhydrides or half acids may be used to cure expoxy, alkyd, amine - formaldehyde thermo-, setting acrylic and other resins containing reactive functional groups.
