An apparatus and method for de-ionizing solutions for example, desalination of sea water. The method consists of accelerating the solution through a passage which has alternating narrow and wide portions and one side of which is at a relatively higher electrical potential than the other side the ions migrating to opposite sides of the passage being allowed to leave the passage to flow in subsidiary channels. The apparatus consists of a passage having alternating narrow and wide portions means for accelerating, the solution through the passage means for producing a potential difference across the passage, and subsidiary channels to opposite sides of the passage for receiving flows of ions …

Why it's free to use
- Granted January 16, 1979. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended January 16, 1996.
